US national security adviser Jake Sullivan, amid conflicting reports that President Volodymyr Zelenskyy plans to fire the commander-in-chief of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, said that personnel decisions in the Ukrainian army depend only on the Ukrainian leadership.
The US does not interfere in personnel decisions of Ukraine
Sullivan was asked in an interview on Face the Nation whether the Ukrainian authorities had informed the White House that the commander-in-chief of the Ukrainian army, Valery Zaluzhnyi, would be fired, and whether this would affect the success of the war.
Sullivan noted that this is the sovereign right of Ukraine and the right of the President of Ukraine to make personnel decisions.
Does Zelenskyy plan to fire Zaluzhny?
On February 2, The Washington Post, citing two anonymous people, reported that Ukraine had informed the White House that President Volodymyr Zelensky had decided to dismiss General Valery Zaluzhny from the post of Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
On January 29, several deputies and mass media reported, citing their sources, that Zaluzhny could be released. The Ministry of Defense of Ukraine issued an official statement that this is not true.
This was also confirmed by the presidential spokesman Serhii Nikiforov in a comment to the media.
