Hungarian leader Viktor Orban admitted that Hungary will never be able to prevent Ukraine from joining the European Union. As Telex's publication finds out, it was recognised by a pro-Russian politician during a debate behind closed doors in the parliament in the spring of 2023.
Orban is powerless against Ukraine in the political arena
As journalists managed to find out, during a non-public session of the parliament, Viktor Orban stated that he is aware of the powerlessness of his country, which will not be able to prevent Ukraine from joining the EU.
In his opinion, despite Hungary's objections, Ukraine's membership in the EU "will be pushed through us relatively quickly."
Viktor Orban is also spreading the word that the US has allegedly promised Kyiv that EU accession negotiations will begin by the end of 2023.
During the closed-door debate, Orbán said his country would insist that Ukraine restore the rights enjoyed by the Hungarian minority until 2015.
According to him, no other proposals for minority protection will be adopted because it is impossible to know how these rules will work in practice, according to his sources.
Orban is afraid of losing financial support cause of Ukraine
According to the pro-Russian politician, after Ukraine acceded to the EU, Kyiv will receive all Central European support, including that which Hungary should receive.
The Hungarian leader drew attention to the fact that it had never happened in the history of Europe that a country at war wanted to be included in the European Union.
