The EU imposed sanctions against the Russian diamond mining giant

Alrosa

On January 3, it became officially known that the Council of the European Union added the Russian diamond mining giant Alros to the sanctions list. Its general director Pavlo Marinichev also came under sanctions.

The Russian diamond mining giant "Alrosa" found itself under EU sanctions

Official Brussels draws attention to the fact that "Alrosa" is the largest diamond mining company in the world, which belongs directly to the authorities of the Russian Federation.

It is essential to understand that it accounts for over 90% of all Russian diamond production.

The EU authorities also emphasize that this company is an integral part of the economic sector, which provides significant revenues to the government of the Russian Federation.

This decision complements the ban on the import of Russian diamonds, included in the 12th package of economic and individual sanctions of the EU, adopted on December 18, 2023 in connection with Russia's aggressive war against Ukraine.

In addition, it is emphasized that the ban on Russian diamonds is part of the G7 efforts.

The G7 intend to leave the aggressor country from an essential source of income from the diamond trade.

As mentioned earlier, EU sanctions against Russians involved in the Russian invasion of Ukraine are currently applied to almost 1,950 individuals and legal entities.
