The Ukrainian minister draws attention not to the fact that the decision to hold an extraordinary summit on this issue was not made due to the veto of Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, "but to the fact that the other 26 European countries are giving Hungary time to agree on accession".

They (the EU - ed.) don't want to have a situation where decisions are constantly made "minus one"," the Ukrainian diplomat explained.

According to Dmytro Kuleba, Brussels has given Budapest a month to negotiate, but if Viktor Orban's team does not want to make concessions, the money will still be allocated.

The Ukrainian minister emphasises that the main issue today is whether all EU members, including Hungary, support the decision to allocate funds.

As it became official on 15 December, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban prevented the EU from adopting a budget decision that would have included a medium-term assistance programme for Ukraine.

Only one country did not agree with the decision... "The other 26 leaders agreed to the package, including Sweden, whose prime minister has to discuss the decision with the parliament under internal procedures, but I expect him to join the others afterwards, said European Council President Charles Michel.

Despite this, he said, the package was not rejected, but postponed.

A new summit to discuss this issue will be held in January 2024.
