Borrel says the EU not to supply million ammunition to Ukraine by March of 2024

European Commission
Josep Borrell

EU member states will not be able to deliver the promised million 155-mm shells to Ukraine by March next year.

What is known about the EU's violation of the conditions of the promise regarding ammunition for Ukraine

According to the EU foreign affairs department chief, Josep Borrell, in response to the question of why the head of the German Defense Ministry, Boris Pistorius, declared the impossibility of transferring the promised million shells to Ukraine by March next year, while the EU Commissioner for Internal Trade and Services, Thierry Breton, said that it was sewing will be observed.

Depends on what we're talking about. Are we talking about production capacity? Are we talking about specific supplies that have already reached the front line and are ready for use? Are we talking about ordering? This is a whole process. At what point do we describe the goal? According to Commissioner Breton, European industry has the capacity to produce one million shells per year. But this does not mean that we will have one million shells ready by March. We may not have one million shells by March, but that will depend on how quickly the industry receives orders and how quickly the industry responds. Therefore, both options can be true at the same time, Borrell explains.

The head of the EU's foreign diplomacy emphasized that it may be impossible to produce one million artillery shells by March. Still, if the industry can have the appropriate amount, the member states should issue an order for this ammunition to be made.

Separately, Borrell noted that the supply of shells to Ukraine continues.

In particular, according to the latest data, delivering more than 300,000 shells to Ukraine has already been possible, or 30% of the goal of 1 million shells. These shells were delivered to Ukraine from stocks or after redirecting orders from third countries.

European industry exports a lot to third countries. Therefore, we appeal to the member states to redirect and change priorities in order to make production for Ukraine a priority, Borrell noted.
