In addition, on the condition that specific reform steps are taken, the deputies call for negotiations on EU integration with Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Georgia should be granted the status of a candidate for accession.

MEPs welcome the new Growth Plan for the Western Balkans and call on EU leaders to also adopt the negotiating framework without delay, as soon as the relevant requirements related to each of the candidate countries are met, in order to quickly start accession negotiations, the resolution states.

A clear timetable for EU enlargement

In particular, the deputies called on the EU to set clear deadlines for candidate countries to join the bloc by the end of the current decade. They oppose a fast track to membership.

MEPs insist on the implementation of the Copenhagen criteria to ensure that candidate countries and potential candidates demonstrate a consistent and sustainable commitment to democracy, the rule of law, human rights, respect and protection of minorities, as well as economic reforms, the press service writes.

EU enlargement is a strategic investment in peace and security

Given the full-scale invasion of the terrorist state of Russia on the territory of Ukraine, EU enlargement has become an even more strategically important investment in peace and security.

Deputies call on the following composition of the College of Commissioners to appoint a commissioner for enlargement and to ensure a clear separation of bilateral issues from enlargement policy.

Members of the European Parliament strongly condemn the statements of the Prime Minister of Hungary about the start of negotiations on joining the EU with Ukraine, as well as about changing the country's policy towards Kosovo. The statements of Mr. Orbán (Viktor Orbán, Prime Minister of Hungary — ed.) hinder the process of EU enlargement, warn MEPs, who remind the Council of the potential negative consequences of Hungary's presidency of the Council in July 2024, the resolution reads.
