Opening speeches by Biden and Xi Jinping
China and the United States have no right to turn their backs on each other, competition should not become the prevailing trend... I consider the bilateral relations between the United States and the People's Republic of China to be "the most important" in the world, Xi Jinping said during his speech.
He acknowledged that over the past 50 years, China-US relations "have never been smooth, but they continue to move forward."
Turning away from each other is not an option for two such large countries as China and the USA, the Chinese leader clarified.
In turn, Biden noted that it is an "honor and pleasure" for him to host the Chinese leader in the United States.
There is no substitute for face-to-face conversations... Mr. President, we have known each other for a long time. We didn't always agree with each other... but our meetings were always frank, direct and helpful, he added.
