According to the military, senior Hamas officials were hiding underground in this network of tunnels when the terrorist group launched its attack in southern Israel on October 7.

The underground network is said to have connected the homes, offices and hideout apartments of senior Hamas officials, including the leader of the terrorist group's military wing, Muhammad Deif, and its top official in Gaza, Yahya Sinwar.

After preliminary reconnaissance, the IDF has monitored the tunnels for the past few days. Their destruction was carried out by the elite combat engineering unit "Yakhalom" and the 401st Armored Brigade.

Representatives of the Israel Defense Forces gave the media a tour of Palestine Square and the entrances to the tunnels.

The square lies in the prestigious Rimal district of Gaza City, which before the war was considered the center of the power elite of the enclave, where high-ranking officials of the terrorist group that rules the sector lived, the publication notes.

As IDF servicemen told journalists, a whole network of tunnels is hidden under the prestigious commercial district, where the highest officials of Hamas lived with their families. They were hiding there on October 7 when the group attacked southern Israel.

The report notes that food and water supplies were found in the living quarters equipped in the tunnels. The Israeli military described the complex as an "underground city of terror" connected to other crucial underground infrastructure facilities in the Gaza Strip.
