The North Atlantic Alliance is expanding its military budget

NATO will increase the alliance's joint defence spending the following year.

The NATO's press service reported it.

The military budget is expected to increase by 12% to €2.03 billion in 2024. The civil budget will increase by 18% to more than €438 million.

Deputy Secretary General of NATO Mircea Geoană emphasized that the increase and expansion of NATO's joint funding allows the members of the Alliance to overcome various security challenges more effectively.

Joint financing demonstrates the solidarity and collective will of the Alliance members. In turbulent times, we need it more than ever, he said.

NATO's civilian budget provides funds for personnel, operational and program costs for NATO headquarters and its international staff.

The military budget covers the operational costs of the headquarters of the NATO Command Structure and missions and operations worldwide.

The third central element of NATO's joint funding is the NATO Security Investment Programme, which covers major construction works and investments in the command and control system. The maximum volume of the program for 2024 is €1.3 billion, which is 30% more than in 2023.

Joint funding budgets strengthen NATO by providing core forces and assets, contributing to deterrence, defense and interoperability, as well as supporting consultation and decision-making at the highest level, NATO said.

Will Ukraine join NATO?

US President Joe Biden said that NATO is in Ukraine's future. Ukraine will become a member of NATO, and only the US must ensure it wins the war.

The US president emphasized his pride in how powerful and united NATO is.

Undoubtedly, NATO is in the future of Ukraine, we just have to make sure that they win the war. We spoke with President Zelenskyy, with the leaders of the Group of Seven in Vilnius and emphasized the need for long-term assistance to Ukraine. That's why we're going step by step, he concluded.

By the way, on December 12, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy arrived at the White House for a meeting with US President Joe Biden amid efforts to maintain military support from Washington.
