The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine has warned Russia's criminal leadership of the consequences if next year's presidential elections are held in the occupied territories.

What is known about the consequences of Russia's presidential elections in the occupied territories

Ukraine's Ministry of Foreign Affairs has warned that the election results in the occupied territories will remain legally unrecognised under international law.

In particular, the officials stressed that the holding of the Russian presidential election in the occupied territories of Ukraine is a violation of the Ukrainian constitutional order and legislation, a gross disregard for international law and the UN Charter.

What is known about responsibility for participating in elections in the occupied territories

Such an electoral process, like other similar propaganda events in the past, would be illegal and invalid. Taking into account the votes received in the temporarily occupied territories of Ukraine will call into question the legitimacy of the entire result of the presidential election in Russia. We call on the international community to strongly condemn Russia's intention to hold presidential elections in the occupied Ukrainian territories and to impose sanctions against those involved in their organisation and conduct, the Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

The agency called on other states not to send observers to these so-called "elections".

Those who take part in them will be held criminally liable under Ukrainian law. Any elections in Russia have nothing to do with democracy. They serve only as a tool to keep the Russian regime in power, the Foreign Ministry warned.
