The Pentagon chief made a statement about his health after being hospitalised

US Department of Defense
Lloyd Austin

US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin, who was hospitalised on January 1, said that he has already recovered and is looking forward to returning to the Pentagon soon.

What is known about the health of the Pentagon chief

Lloyd Austin's statement was published on the Pentagon website.

I am very glad that I have recovered and I look forward to returning to the Pentagon in the near future," the Pentagon chief said.

As it turned out the day before, Austin was admitted to the hospital on January 1 with complications after a scheduled medical procedure.

I want to thank the wonderful doctors and nurses at Walter Reed for the exceptional care they gave me and the personal warmth they showed to my family. I also appreciate all the information and wishes from colleagues and friends, the message says.

Austin admitted that he could have done a better job of informing the public about his health problems and promised to get better.

I also understand the media's concerns about transparency and recognize that I could do better to ensure that the public is properly informed. I undertake to do better, the official wrote.

However, he emphasised that this was his routine medical procedure and took full responsibility for his decision to disclose.

The US Ministry of Defense has warned of the consequences if there is no money for aid to Ukraine

According to Pentagon spokesman Patrick Ryder, if the US Congress does not approve President Joe Biden's request to finance further military aid to Ukraine, Washington must choose between its combat readiness and the supply of weapons to Kyiv.

Ryder officially confirmed that the US Department of Defense has about $4.4 billion left and another $1 billion in the Presidential Assistance Fund.

Of course, we have the option to spend the entire $4.4 billion, but that's a tough choice. Ultimately, we will have to make decisions about our own combat readiness and our ability to continue to support Ukraine to the extent that it must be supported on the battlefield. This is the reason why we are asking Congress to approve the request for additional funding as quickly as possible, the US Department of Defense representative explained.
