The British government reported that the Russian FSB interfered in political processes with the help of cyberattacks. In particular, since 2015, they intercepted letters and private conversations of high-ranking politicians.

Russian hackers intercepted the conversations of British politicians

Deputy Foreign Minister Leo Docherty said in the House of Commons that sanctions have been imposed against two people from the hacker group "Star Blizzard". One of them is a current FSB officer.

It is believed that this group is under the control of the "Center 18" division of the FSB of the Russian Federation.

The country revealed the names of the people behind the hacks:

  • Ruslan Peretiatko, Russian FSB intelligence officer, member of Star Blizzard AKA Callisto Group;

  • Andrei Korinets, aka Oleksiy Doguzhiev, member of Star Blizzard, AKA the Callisto Group.

In addition, the Russian ambassador, Andrei Kelin, was summoned to the British Foreign Ministry.

The group is accused of carrying out hundreds of targeted hacking attacks on British politicians, civil servants, think tanks, journalists, academics and other members of public life.

Hackers attacked individuals' private emails after conducting extensive research and creating fake accounts impersonating their contacts.

This group is believed to have focused on hacking data, while others distributed it through various channels.

Russia is targeting the democratic process in Great Britain. This group received a huge amount of data. This information is used to undermine the West in various ways, Western officials said.

The UK Home Secretary James Cleverley called the Russian attacks an attack on British values and freedoms.

The government announced that on December 7, Great Britain, together with the United States, Australia, New Zealand and Canada, will publish cybersecurity guidelines to prevent similar crimes in the future.

What has preceded it

On February 2023, a British MP, Steward McDonald, claimed that his email had been hacked by someone posing as one of his staff. He announced this publicly to prevent any emails from being leaked. They never appeared.

The UK has already accused Russia of meddling in the 2019 election after the theft of documents on US-UK trade from Conservative MP Liam Fox, which were then leaked online but has yet to name who might be behind it.

Also earlier, hackers associated with the Russian Federation and China hacked Britain's most dangerous nuclear facility.

Britain has repeatedly warned that Russian-backed hackers seek to disrupt or destroy the country's critical infrastructure.
