Great Britain is trying to overcome its dependence on Russian nuclear fuel. As part of the HALEU program, the country will produce enriched uranium to operate next-generation reactors. It will also bring jobs and investment to North West England.
The UK has found a replacement for Russian nuclear fuel
The UK is investing 300 million pounds (over $380 million) to launch the high-assay low-enriched uranium (HALEU) for nuclear reactors.
This was reported in the press service of the British government.
The investment aims to strengthen the supply of nuclear fuel for new nuclear projects in the country and reduce global dependence on Russia's supply of nuclear fuel.
The program will produce enriched uranium necessary to operate next-generation reactors. It said the program would bring jobs and investment to North West England.
The press release adds that the investment is part of plans to provide up to 24 GW of clean and reliable nuclear power by 20, a quarter of the UK's electricity needs.
In addition, the British government will direct an additional 10 million pounds (over 12.7 million dollars) to develop skills and sites for producing other advanced types of nuclear fuel.
Ukraine will provide itself with nuclear. fuel
By 2026, thanks to its production, Ukraine plans to provide half of itself with nuclear fuel and the other half to receive from a partnership with Westinghouse.
This was stated by the president of "Energoatom" Petro Kotin, during a working visit to one of the separated units of NAEK, the company's press service reports.
According to him, the progress and further development of own production will secure the final departure from technologies from the Russian Federation.
In particular, Ukraine continues licensing, which should be completed this year, to increase the industrial production of shanks of heat-separating assemblies of nuclear reactors of nuclear power plants, which the "Energoatom" company implements using Westinghouse technology.
A similar process is also planned for fuel cartridge heads in 2024.
