The British government will not lift sanctions against the Russian Federation immediately after the end of the war in Ukraine. This will be done so that Moscow cannot quickly restore its military capabilities.

Britain will not lift sanctions against the Russian Federation

According to Nusrat Ghani, the Minister of State for Industry and Economic Security of Great Britain, maintaining sanctions against the Russian Federation will prevent the rapid recovery of the Kremlin's military potential.

Sanctions will continue to apply when the war ends. They will not be canceled the day the war ends, Ghani said, speaking at the Policy Exchange think tank in London.

According to her, the British government intends to prevent the "restoration of the military capabilities of the Russian Federation" immediately after the end of hostilities.

A department is being created to monitor sanctions against Russia in the UK

Great Britain has created a new unit to fight companies evading Russian sanctions.

The Office of Trade Sanctions Implementation (OTSI) will monitor compliance with trade sanctions, particularly against Russia.

The unit will help companies comply with sanctions and investigate violations. The authority can fine the company if violations are proven or refer the case to HMRC (His Majesty Revenue and Customs) for prosecution.

In addition, OTSI will monitor the activities of companies that may try to circumvent sanctions by sending products through other countries.

The authority will begin work in early 2024, once the new legal requirements come into force, and will strengthen the government's existing position to enforce Britain's trade sanctions.
