In case of failure to comply with the requirements and provisions set out in the letter from the Commissioner for the Protection of the State Language, the Committee of the Ukrainian Football Association (UAF) will be forced to apply its own disciplinary measures to violators, in addition to the sanctions and fines provided for by law.

Non-state language warning for football referees

The Ukrainian Football Association imposed disciplinary sanctions in the form of a warning on referees who used non-state language during football matches

This was reported by the press service of the Commissioner for the Protection of the State Language, who sent a corresponding appeal to the Supreme Court.

It is noted that the chairman of the UAF Arbitration Committee Luciano Luci warned UPL referees, assistant referees and UPL arbitration observers about the inadmissibility of using a foreign language at football matches.

In the event of non-compliance with the requirements and provisions specified in the letter from the Commissioner for the Protection of the State Language, the committee will be forced to apply its own disciplinary measures to violators, in addition to the sanctions and fines provided for by law, including temporary suspension from matches and sending a corresponding statement to the UAF Ethics and Fair Play Committee, Luciano Luci stressed.

Kremen also noted that this year the Commissioner's office received more than 60 appeals from citizens regarding signs of violations of language legislation in the field of sports.

Ukrainian football referees entered the Champions League

The penultimate round of the UEFA Champions League 2023/24 group stage match between Real Sociedad of Spain and Salzburg of Austria will be refereed by a team of referees from Ukraine led by Mykola Balakin.

This is reported by the official website of UEFA.

The Real Sociedad vs Salzburg match will take place on 29 November. The match will be hosted by the Anoeta Stadium. The starting whistle will be blown at 22:00 Kyiv time.

Balakin will be the main referee. He will be assisted by his compatriots Oleksandr Berkut and Dmytro Zaporozhchenko as linesmen. The fourth referee will be another Ukrainian, Yaroslav Kozik. The Polish referee Tomasz Kwiatkowski will work with the video assistant referee (VAR) system.

Ukrainian referees have not worked in the Champions League group stage since the 1998/99 season. At that time, Vasyl Melnychuk from Simferopol also worked in the Basque Country, refereeing the Athletic Bilbao vs Rosenborg Trondheim match. He is currently working as a UAF arbitration observer.
