The US House of Representatives has passed a temporary spending bill to prevent a government shutdown. It did not include the support of Ukraine and Israel.

What does the draft law on avoiding shutdown provide

The approved draft law provides for the continuation of state funding until mid-January. It passed by 336 votes — 209 Democrats and 127 Republicans, while 93 Republicans and two Democrats voted against it.

Reuters writes that this was a victory for the new Speaker of the House of Representatives, Mike Johnson, who faced opposition from some of his Republican colleagues during the first vote on the bill.

The interim spending bill would continue government funding at current levels through 2024, giving lawmakers more time to craft detailed spending bills covering everything from military financing to scientific research.

Will Biden sign the new bill

Now, the draft law has been sent to the Senate for a vote, where the leaders of the Democrats and Republicans have expressed their support for it.

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, a Democrat, said he was pleased the bill passed with a “strong bipartisan vote.” He added that he would work with his Republican Senate counterpart, Mitch McConnell, to pass it “as soon as possible.”

After passing the Senate, President Joe Biden can sign the bill before current funding for federal agencies expires at midnight on Friday, November 17.
