The USA has struck a new blow against Houthi targets in Yemen amid the group's constant attacks on international vessels in the region.

What is known about the new US strike

The US struck after a drone from Yemen's Houthi-controlled territory in the Gulf of Aden hit the Genco Picardy on Wednesday.

Genco Picardy is a Marshall Islands-flagged bulk carrier owned and operated by the United States.

As a result of this incident, no one was injured. Dry cargo remains seaworthy, although it has suffered some damage.

Around 3:45 a.m., the Central Command of the US Armed Forces confirmed strikes on Houthi missile installations in Yemen.

What is known about the Houthis and their attacks

The Houthi group controls most of western Yemen and controls the Red Sea coast.

Shortly after the start of the Gaza war in October 2023, the Houthis began launching missile and drone strikes against civilian vessels in the Red Sea.

On November 19, the Houthis, with the help of a helicopter, seized the Galaxy Leader car carrier, chartered by a Japanese company connected to an Israeli businessman, and kidnapped the crew.

On December 18, the United States announced the launch of Operation Prosperity Guardian in response to Houthi attacks. By December 31, US helicopters fired at a group of boats with militants trying to board the container ship.

On January 9, US and UK warships shot down 21 drones and a missile fired by the Houthis.

The Houthis are supported by Iran because they support Hamas in the war in Gaza.
