Officials of Turkey and the United States held talks in Washington. Among the topics was the war between Ukraine and Russia.

What the representatives of Turkey and the USA talked about

According to Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan, officials held several rounds of talks on topics such as:

  • Syria;

  • Ukraine;

  • Gaza Strip;

  • defense industry cooperation;

  • energy;

  • fight against terrorism.

The minister added that the parties have achieved certain "changes in the psychology of their relations" and also expect a more positive agenda in further interaction.

In solving the problems we are currently facing, it is also important to realize the joint potential that the two nations can create and the opportunities that they can provide, he said.

According to the publication, Fidan also discussed ways to stop Russia's invasion of Ukraine with his American colleague Anthony Blinken and national security adviser Jake Sullivan. According to him, Turkey did not notice that Kyiv and Moscow were ready for this.

We need a basis for talks to stop this war and a dialogue to prevent worse crises, and we call for it, said the head of the Turkish Foreign Ministry.

The position of Turkey during the war in Ukraine

At the end of February, the President of Turkey stated that his country was ready to resume the process of negotiations between Russia and Ukraine, which had previously taken place in Istanbul. In particular, Erdogan reminded of the relevant initiative yesterday, March 8, during the visit of President Volodymyr Zelenskyi to Turkey. The leader of Ukraine noted that Kyiv does not see a place for representatives of Russia at this summit.

Also in February, Turkey started work on a new mechanism for exporting Ukrainian grain to world markets after Russia withdrew from the "grain agreement" last year. At the same time, Kyiv opened temporary corridors for civilian merchant vessels.

In particular, on January 11, 2023, Turkish Defense Minister Yasar Güler, his Romanian counterpart Angel Tilvar and Bulgarian Deputy Defense Minister Atanas Zapryanov signed an agreement on demining the Black Sea in Istanbul.
