On January 20, the Ukrainian people remember the feat of the soldiers, who for hundreds of days steadfastly stood in defense of their homeland, repelling the attacks of the Russian invaders and their proxies.
January 20, the Day of Commemoration of Defenders of Donetsk Airport is celebrated
"Cyborgs survived, concrete did not" — every Ukrainian man and woman knows this eloquent phrase, as well as millions of friends of our homeland abroad.
It reminds us that the Ukrainian people cannot be broken, they will fight to the last for their independence.
The courage of the Donetsk airport defenders, who defended the airport from the Russian army from May 26, 2014 to January 22, 2015, is sung in songs and described in dozens of books.
The most interesting thing is that the Russian invaders began to call Ukrainian soldiers "cyborgs" themselves, who did not believe that living people, made of flesh and blood, could defend the airport buildings for so long and steadfastly.
On January 13, 2015, the DAP control tower collapsed as a result of constant shelling by the Russians.
What is important to understand is that the 45-meter-high structure was a strategic object of the airport's defense.
According to the participants of the battles for the Donetsk airport, the most terrible days of the defense were January 19 (the first explosion of the terminal cover by militants), January 20 (the second explosion), when 51 defenders were killed, and January 21, when a soldier of the 90th separate air mobile battalion of the 81st was killed OAEMBr Igor Branovytskyi.
Ukraine will fight for independence and the memory of all defenders
Ukrainians will never forget that more than 200 Ukrainian soldiers died defending the Donetsk airport. More than 500 DAP defenders were wounded.
The 244-day defense of the Donetsk airport gave the Ukrainians the strength to fight on.
For almost 2 years, our nation has been in a state of full-scale war with Russia, which began its invasion on February 24, 2022.
