Recently, the Ukrainian Ground Forces Commander, Colonel General Oleksandr Syrskyi, called on the US to supply Ukraine with various series of A-10 attack aircraft and helicopters. The Air Force Commander, Lieutenant General Mykola Oleschuk, commented on this statement.
Oleschuk reacted to Syrskyi's statement about attack aircraft for Ukraine's Armed Forces
General Oleshchuk fully supports Oleksandr Syrskyi's position on strengthening the capabilities of Ukraine's strike aviation.
He also noted the Air Force is considering various aviation platforms to strengthen and further develop Ukraine's combat aviation.
Training on F-16 fighter jets is obviously a priority at this moment, and Ukrainian pilots are already training on them. Yet our experts are considering other possibilities of increasing combat potential of [Ukrainian — Ed.] aircraft in general.
General Oleschuk notes that the Air Force has four main types of combat aircraft, but Western equipment will gradually replace them.
We definitely will not be able to immediately abandon the Soviet aircrafts. Therefore, alongside the F-16, the MiG-29 will operate in the sky. It is possible that the combat capabilities of the Su-24M bombers will be strengthened by the Mirage-2000D, and the Su-25 attack aircraft — by the A-10 Thunderbolt II.
What does Syrskyi say about attack aircraft for Ukraine
Recently, the Ukrainian Ground Forces commander, Colonel General Oleksandr Syrsky, called Washington to transfer A-10 attack aircraft and helicopters of various series to the Ukrainian Armed Forces.
According to him, they will maximally help the advance of the infantry on the battlefield.
I would talk about the A-10 as an option if they are given to us... it is not a new machine, but it is reliable, has proven itself in many wars, and has a wide array of weapons to destroy ground targets to assist infantry. It is designed to destroy ground targets: tanks, artillery... anything that opposes infantry.
