The Security Service of Ukraine (SSU) has opened criminal proceedings for illegal wiretapping and video recording of representatives of the Bihus.Info project.

SSU investigates the wiretapping of Bihus.Info journalists

SSU reported that criminal proceedings have been opened for illegal wiretapping and video recording of journalists following Article 359 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine (illegal acquisition, sale or use of special technical means of obtaining information).

SSU believes that the transparent and unimpeded work of independent and professional mass media is an important condition for the development of Ukraine as a democratic state, the message says.

They added that similar surveillance facts should be given a legal assessment, regardless of whether or not facts of a possible violation of the law related to the circulation of narcotic substances were made public in the materials of the covert filming.

This can only be evaluated by law enforcement agencies in accordance with their jurisdiction.

Wiretapping of Bihus.Info journalists: what is known

On January 16, the Narodna Pravda resource shared a video online. Several representatives of Bihus.Info probably used drugs at a corporate party. The video also contains recordings of conversations and phone calls of these employees.

The founder of the project, Denys Bigus, said that the journalists did not use drugs in the video. They were the cameramen. He added that he does not justify their behaviour so they will be fired.

He also noted that the project team had been monitored for about a year: fragments of the video were edited from several episodes.

Bigus added that representatives of the "yet to be identified service" installed cameras in the rooms of the suburban complex, where members of the Bihus.Info team were celebrating a corporate party.
