Ukrainian air defence forces destroy 35 Russian Shaheds drones overnight

On the night of 2 January, Russian troops attacked Ukraine with 35 units of Shahid-136/131 attack UAVs. Air defence forces shot down all the air targets.

The Air Force notes that the Russians attacked with drones from Cape Chauda in Crimea and the Primorsko-Akhtarsky district in Russia.

All enemy attack UAVs were destroyed by the Ukrainian Air Force and Defence Forces.

The southern defence forces of Ukraine report that the Russians launched the drones in two waves, more than 3 hours apart, starting in the evening of 1 January.

The first wave lasted about an hour, and the second wave lasted five hours in a row.

Air defence units in the south shot down 6 drones:

  • 3 - in the Mykolaiv region (one of them was reported by the air command the night before)

  • 2 - in Dnipropetrovsk region

  • 1 - in the Kherson region.

In Mykolaiv, the wreckage of a downed UAV caused a fire in garages, which firefighters were able to quickly extinguish. People were not injured.

How many missiles and drones of Russia were destroyed by Ukraine?

The Commander of the Air Force of the Armed Forces of Ukraine Mykola Oleshchuk said that from 24 February 2022 to 31 December 2023, the Ukrainian Defence Forces destroyed 1,709 missiles of various types. Among them:

  • out of 1360 launched Kh-101/555/55 missiles 1045 missiles were destroyed;

  • Kalibr sea-launched strategic cruise missile: 397 out of 834 were destroyed;

  • Iskander-K cruise missile: 62 out of 154 were destroyed;

  • Shahed-136/131 attack unmanned aerial vehicles: 3095 out of 3940 were destroyed.

The percentage of downed cruise missiles and attack UAVs is currently around 85%.
