Armed Forces prepare for new offensive of Russia in Kharkiv region
A source close to Ukraine's armed forces claims that the massive Russian strikes on Kharkiv and surrounding towns on Thursday are seen as part of Russia's preparations for a large-scale offensive in the coming weeks. Late on Wednesday evening, the newspaper's source said: "Military targets across the region have been shelled all day in preparation for the offensive".
Local military intelligence units believe that Russian troops may be planning further intensification of air strikes this weekend, 7 January.
According to The Telegraph's source, a ground offensive could begin shortly afterwards, with a possible start date of 15 January.
At the same time, Western analysts point out that little has changed on the frontline, it remains largely static, and Russian troops are only carrying out sporadic attacks.
