Another Houthi anti-ship cruise missile was downed

A US fighter jet shot down an anti-ship cruise missile fired from Houthi militia areas in Yemen towards a US destroyer operating in the southern part of the Red Sea.

This was announced by the Central Command of the US Armed Forces (CENTCOM) on the X network (formerly Twitter).

According to the US military, an anti-ship cruise missile was fired from the Iranian-backed Houthi militia areas in Yemen towards the destroyer USS Laboon (DDG 58), which was operating in the southern Red Sea.

On January 14, at approximately 16:45 (local time), a missile was shot down by US fighter jets in vinicity of the coast of Hudeidah. There are no reports of casualties or damage, CENTCOM said in a statement.

Earlier on Sunday, the Houthis complained that US planes had flown close to Yemeni airspace and coastal areas.

The Red Sea crisis is said to have heightened concerns about the broader conflict in the Middle East beyond Gaza.

What is happening in the Red Sea

In November 2023, the Shiite Zaydi militia, also known as the Yemeni Houthis, launched attacks on civilian vessels in the Red Sea with ties to Israel. This is happening against the backdrop of Israel's war with Hamas, which Yemeni militants and Iran support.

On January 10, the Houthis launched one of the most significant attacks on the Red Sea in recent months. The US Navy shot down 24 missiles and UAVs of militants launched from Yemen.

On the night of January 12, the US and UK Armed forces, with the support of Australia, Bahrain, Canada and the Netherlands, carried out joint strikes on Houthi targets in Yemen.

Aircraft and ships were involved in the operation. Weapons storage centres and militant training bases were the targets of the strikes. 60 targets in 16 locations were hit.

However, the Houthis can continue to attack the ships.
