The US Senate presented a compromise bill on border protection, aid to Ukraine and Israel in the amount of $118.28 billion.
What is known about the new bill from the US Senate
The $118 billion package combines US border protection policies with aid to Ukraine and Israel.
In particular, $60.1 billion is earmarked for aid to Ukraine and more than 14 billion dollars to support Israel.
The document also provides for humanitarian aid funding for operations in the Red Sea and Taiwan.
At the same time, money for Ukraine will be distributed as follows:
About 14 billion dollars is provided for the purchase of new weapons from the companies of the American military industry;
$15 billion for military training of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, as well as intelligence exchange and other support measures;
about $8 billion — for direct budget support of Ukraine;
$1.58 billion to support the Ukrainian economy.
According to Biden, if the USA "does not stop Putin's appetite for power and control in Ukraine, it will not be limited to Ukraine only — the price for America will increase."
Also, 20 billion dollars will be allocated to replenish military depots in the USA. In addition, the document includes funding for humanitarian aid in the Red Sea and Taiwan.
The document says the main difference in the new proposal is that more than $13 billion is allocated to border security, which has been the main point of contention during months of negotiations in the Senate.
The leader of the majority in the Senate, Chuck Schumer, said that the vote on the bill will take place no later than February 7.
What has preceded it
The House of Representatives Speaker Mike Johnson denied at a press conference on January 30 that his position on the agreement to protect the border with Mexico, which Republicans have linked to additional funding for Ukraine, is intended to help Donald Trump win the election.
Before that, he said that the Senate's border bill, which includes aid to Ukraine as well as other countries, will not be approved in the House of Representatives if reports about its conditions are true.
Representatives of the Republican Party demanded from the White House decisive measures to curb illegal immigration on the US-Mexico border.
A package of additional funding, which provides $61 billion for Ukraine's needs, has been stuck in Congress due to disputes over what measures should be taken.
The White House previously stated that they no longer have money for new military support for Ukraine until the US Congress approves it.
