According to Politico, the US President Joe Biden's team wants to ensure that Ukraine is in the best possible position in "possible negotiations" with Russia and is already discussing a potential shift to a more defensive strategy.

How the USA sees the further development of the Russian-Ukrainian war

The news source claims to have spoken to insiders from Joe Biden's administration, as well as a European diplomat in Washington, all of whom spoke on condition of anonymity.

According to the journalists, American and European officials are allegedly discussing Ukraine's transition to a more defensive strategy after the "largely unsuccessful counteroffensive".

First of all, this means strengthening air defence systems, building powerful fortifications, installing barbed wire, anti-tank barriers and ditches along the border with Belarus.

In addition, it is noted that the White House is focused on the rapid revival of Ukraine's own defence industry to supply much-needed weapons.

The US does not influence Kyiv's decisions

According to one insider, against the backdrop of recent events, Joe Biden's team is not trying to dissuade Ukraine from preparing for future offensive actions.

In addition, it is noted that no negotiations with the Russian authorities are currently planned.

A European diplomat in Washington tells Politico that the European Union is also threatening to speed up Ukraine's accession to NATO to "put Ukrainians in a better position to negotiate" with Russia.

According to the publication, the reason for the change in the US strategy is the domestic political situation in the US (falling Biden's ratings, the upcoming elections in 2024).

However, journalists believe that events in Ukraine also influence the decisions of the US.
