We want our energy facilities to be protected from attacks by reinforced concrete

Mariia Okhrimenko

Why is it important to protect energy facilities for ensuring the energy security of Ukraine, Mariia Okhrimenko, the winner of the Essay Contest on energy security, which was held by the USAID Energy Security Project (ESP), shared in her essay with online.ua.

Ukraine’s energy security can be divided into two components:

  • independence of the energy system from external security influences

  • the availability of energy resources, their rational use, increasing the stability of the energy system, increasing the stability of energy supply, increasing the efficiency of energy generating plants, taking energy efficiency measures, reducing the percentage of heat loss, using small and medium-sized distributed generation, the ability to accumulate energy, optimal timely solutions in emergencies, effective use of available resources, modernization of outdated energy equipment, etc.

All these components form a picture of our energy independence and security. Suppose our extensive centralized system is distributed into smaller parts that can operate independently, connect to the united system as needed, or individually provide power to critical facilities. In that case, the power system should become more stable.

Of course, we need funds for protective structures and modernization of energy equipment. At least we want our energy facilities to be protected from attacks by reinforced concrete.

All this requires financial resources. I am personally grateful for the international aid, thanks to which our power plants and boiler houses continue to work despite enemy shelling.

Without heat and light in winter, life turns into survival. I need to live and develop in Ukraine.

What can I personally do to strengthen Ukraine’s energy security? I can encourage peers and others around me to think, consume rationally, and draw attention to the topic.

It is wise to use energy resources now and prepare for winter by stocking up on simple things such as food that does not require processing, warm blankets and thermal clothing, power banks, battery-powered lamps, etc.

I can study well and take care of my health so that in the future, I can work for the benefit of Ukraine in a Ukraine that is well-supplied with energy.
