Ukraine needs to increase the number of military means that will be rational for shooting down UAVs. Today, the Gepard self-propelled anti-aircraft gun (SPAAG) is the leader in this regard —
in terms of cost and efficiency ratio.
Which Ukrainian weapon is the best at shooting down Russian drones
The SPAAG Gepard is the most effective in repulsing the kamikaze drones that the Russians constantly launch over Ukraine.
The spokesman of the Air Force of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Yuriy Ignat, informs about it.
According to him, the Russians strike with many drones, and one must understand that each drone always has its purpose. They were aimed at some military, infrastructural, or strategic object. The massive drone attack on Kyiv on November 25 was no exception.
There are plenty of such objects in Kyiv that they would like to hit. Secondly, they forced us to spend a certain amount of cruise missiles to repel this blow. This is already the second, secondary goal is the exhaustion of our air defense, Ignat said.
The spokesman said that anti-aircraft guns shot down 40% of mobile fire groups, small arms or Gepard, or Crotale shot down some, and some could be shot down by a fighter jet.
But for the rest, powerful air defense systems had to be used. The enemy also understands this well, so the Russians also have the goal of exhaustion. Therefore, it is necessary to increase the number of those means that will be rational for shooting down drones. Today, SPAAG Gepard shows itself to be the best in terms of cost-effectiveness ratio. But it also has a limited radius of action — 4.5 km for shooting down with ground shells, Ignat explained.
Therefore, according to the spokesman, Ukraine needs more Gepard air defense systems and their counterparts.
Protection from Russian strikes
Earlier, the DIU representative Vadym Skibitsky called the limited capabilities of Ukrainian air defense one of the reasons why Russia was able to hit the energy network last year easily.
He believes it will be more difficult for the Russians to achieve their goal since Ukraine now has a more powerful air defense system. In addition, the energy industry has been preparing all year for renewed missile and drone strikes by Russian terrorists.
Skibitskyy believes that this year's mass strikes may resume after the beginning of the autumn-winter period when electricity consumption will peak.
The "Ukrenergo" chief, Volodymyr Kudrytskyy, said there might be problems related to mass shelling this winter. But the power system will not collapse and will work.
Politico writes that Western air defense has made Kyiv a rare, safe place in warring Ukraine. Several types of anti-aircraft defense of different radii are currently operating in the capital.
