Lithuanian MEP Rasa Yukniavicene called on the European Commission and the Council of the EU to consider depriving Hungary of its voting rights.

Lithuania called to deprive Hungary of the right to vote in the EU

Our lawyers have to find a legally correct way to stop the internal and external disintegration [of the European Union]," Yukniavicene said.

She asked why the EU was not doing anything to stop the Hungarian prime minister.

Who does Orban work for? For Putin! But why isn't the EU doing anything to stop him? Don't you see the European Union tearing itself apart from the inside? I say that we will see. But unfortunately, the means to stop it are too weak. It's disappointing because people want an effective EU. It cannot go on like this. If we allow Putin to destroy not only Ukraine but also the EU, we will have to face existential questions.

She added that she did not believe that the Hungarian people, who have been an example for everyone since 1956, would want Russia to win. The rule of law must protect the structure of the European Union, Yukniavicene stressed in her speech to the European Council.

Orban blocked the allocation of 50 billion euros for Ukraine

On 14 December, during the EU summit, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban only at the last minute allowed Ukraine to submit an invitation to join the EU.

He left the room during the vote and thus abstained. However, he later stated that he would have many more opportunities to block negotiations on Ukraine's Common Energy Space.

He also prevented the European Union from providing Ukraine with a €50 billion support package.
