According to The Washington Post, the team of American leader Joe Biden has started negotiations with the Palestinians, as well as partners, on the possibility of "renewing" the Palestinian Authority while maintaining the leadership of Mahmoud Abbas.
The US wants to "renew" the Palestinian Authority
As an insider in the White House told reporters, the administration of the US president has already started negotiations on "a new government and fresh blood that will enter the ranks of the government (of the Palestinian Authority) together with Abbas and under his leadership."
However, the Palestinian Authority insists that such initiatives and proposals be linked to an apparent "political horizon" of their statehood.
Interestingly, she does not believe that official Washington will be able to successfully implement a specific plan while Israel is ruled by the current "ultra-right government".
Moreover, the Biden team is struggling to negotiate with Palestine amid Tel Aviv's blocking of $140 million in tax deductions intended for Gaza, which were cut off after the October 7 attack by Hamas militants.
Palestine is already presenting its demands to the United States
According to the representative of the central committee of the Movement for the Liberation of Palestine (FATAH), Sabri Saidam, the starting point for the negotiations should be a ceasefire.
As The Washington Post reports, Washington, together with its partners, hopes to prepare the forces of the Palestinian Authority to perform security duties in Gaza as soon as possible.
However, there are no specific agreements yet.
