YouControl named top initiators for initiating sanctions against Russia

YouControl analysts singled out the leaders who initiated the introduction of sanctions against the Russian Federation. They are the USA, the EU and the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine. The maximum number of imposed sanctions was recorded during 2022 — 15,205.

The introduction of sanctions against Russia over the past ten years

The full-scale invasion of the Russian Federation into Ukraine in 2022 provoked a reaction from the democratic world and the Ukrainian authorities, which led to the introduction of the most significant number of sanctions against the Russian Federation in the last ten years.

YouControl notes that the maximum number of imposed sanctions was recorded during 2022 - 15,205.

At the same time, if we focus on the sanctions of the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine (NSDC), the peak falls in 2023 — 6,300 against almost 5,000 sanctioned persons in 2022.

The international community introduced the maximum levels of sanctions pressure on the Russian Federation and Belarus: the USA, EU, Great Britain, Japan, Australia, Canada, Switzerland, New Zealand and Poland. According to the 2022 results, there will be more than 15,000 sanctions.

In the first half of 2023, the number of introduced international sanctions fell significantly, decreasing many times to 3.9 thousand sanctions, many of which are duplicated from country to country.

Who most often imposes sanctions against the Russian Federation

According to YouControl, among the leaders who introduced sanctions was the European Union, which imposed restrictions on 1,087 people. This is 28.5% of the total number of cases.

In second place is the USA, which was the first to initiate 1,033 sanctions (27.1%). The NSDC is in third place with 699 sanctions.

Excluding Canada's and UK's sanctions initiatives against 510 and 251 individuals, respectively, the rest of the jurisdictions generally followed the major players above in terms of sanctions activity.
