Zelenskyy: West's sanction weak policy strengthens Russia's nuclear industry

President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, called for strengthening of restrictive measures, in particular regarding the nuclear industry of the aggressor country.

Zelenskyy voiced the obvious weakness of the West in sanctions against Russia

During his speech at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Volodymyr Zelenskyy said that many sanctions measures by Western countries were delayed for months and even years due to "a flurry of threats from Moscow".

In this context, the head of state spoke about the ability of Russia to circumvent certain imposed restrictions, in particular, to continue the production of missile weapons.

And how can you be satisfied with sanctions against Russia or export controls, if they do not even block its production of missiles? Every Russian missile has critical components from Western countries. Dozens of components in each rocket, he emphasised.

Zelenskyy expressed his gratitude to the partner countries for each approved and introduced package of sanctions. However, he noted that "approaching peace will be a reward for all those who take care that the sanctions work one hundred percent".

And, by the way, the obvious weakness of the West is that the Russian nuclear industry is still not under global sanctions, although Putin is the only terrorist in the world who took a nuclear power plant hostage (Zaporizhka Nuclear Power Plant — ed.),’’ President said.

According to Zelenskyy, there should be "a strong decision, this year, when the frozen Russian assets, sovereign and oligarchic, will be directed to the defence against the Russian war and to the restoration of Ukraine".

Putin loves money above all else. The more billions he and his oligarchs, friends and associates loose, the more likely he will regret starting this war,’’ Zelenskyy said.

What is known about the probability of using the frozen assets of Russia for the benefit of Ukraine

US Special Representative for Ukraine's Economic Recovery, Penny Pritzker, emphasised that there is currently progress on the issue of using the frozen assets of Russia for the benefit of Ukraine.

The representative noted that the G7 member states agreed that Russia should pay a high price for the destruction in Ukraine caused by the criminal war unleashed by the Kremlin.

According to her, the G7 countries have already confirmed their intention to keep Russian assets frozen.

Mrs Pritzker added that a decision on how exactly these assets will be used has not yet been made, but the relevant ministries have already been instructed to find all possible ways to receive compensation.

The Ukraine's representative reminded that the US has a draft law "On restoring economic prosperity and opportunities for Ukrainians", which is supported by the Biden administration.
