Amid Zelenskyy's visit, Germany announces new military aid package for Ukraine

Germany has announced a new military aid package for Ukraine, including the Patriot air defence system.

What is known about the new package of military aid from Germany

According to the German government, the new package includes the Patriot air defence system and missiles for it.

In addition, Ukraine will receive:

  • 9 amphibious oversnow tracked articulated all-terrain vehicle Bandvagn 202;

  • 7 thousand 390 rounds of ammunition for 155-mm artillery;

  • 3 unmanned demining machines;

  • 14 drone detection systems;

  • 8 Mercedes-Benz Zetros trucks;

  • 4 trailers for 8x8 HX81 tactical trucks;

  • 8 Mercedes-Benz Zetros off-road trucks for extreme operations;

  • over 47,000 40mm grenade launcher ammunition.

What is known about Zelenskyy's visit to Germany

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy arrived in Germany for an unannounced visit.

According to German law enforcement, Zelenskyy arrived in Frankfurt am Main. Tightened security measures were taken throughout the region, and a number of roads were closed.

After arriving, Volodymyr Zelenskyy headed to Wiesbaden, where the US headquarters for military assistance to Ukraine is located.

According to the Ukrainian president's spokesman, Serhiy Nikiforov, the purpose of the visit is to visit the military base in Wiesbaden, from which the partners coordinate assistance to Ukraine.

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, along with other European leaders, is in Brussels for the EU leaders' summit.

In the morning, the President addressed a meeting of the European Council via video link. He told EU leaders that today "determination will be either in Brussels or in Moscow" and reminded them of "the solution that was promised".

European diplomats also told Western journalists that Volodymyr Zelenskyy had not been invited to the EU summit in Brussels because of the likely reaction of Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban.
