The British minister warns that a really difficult period may begin soon, so not only his country, but also all geopolitical players need to prepare for it.
According to Grant Shapps, the fate of Ukraine and many of its partners will be decided this year, because 2024 will be the "turning point".
For Ukraine, this is the year when its fate can be decided. For the world, this is the biggest "year of democracy" in history, when almost half of the world's population goes to the polls. And for Britain, this should be a time when we make a decision about our defenсe, he explains.
According to Grant Shapps, the international community should do everything possible for Ukraine's victory.
He adds that the only weapon capable of stopping Putin is the stability of the partners of official Kyiv.
Giving him victory in this war only increases the risk of escalation. Not only because he is fixated on rebuilding the Russian Empire, but because it will be a signal of weakness for other potential aggressors, the British minister explained.
Shapps named the main challenges for democratic countries
The head of the British Defense Ministry also points out that in the next 5 years, London and its allies will face many challenges related to the actions of Russia, China, Iran and North Korea.
According to him, the current British government has decided to allocate more than 50 billion pounds a year for defenсe.
What is important to understand is that this is a record number.
And we have made a major decision to move towards 2.5% of GDP on defenсe... It is time for all our allies and all the democracies of the world to do the same, to increase their defenсe spending. Because the era of "peace dividends" is over.
