Leaders of the US Republican Party are openly expressing doubts about reaching an agreement on changes to immigration policy in exchange for approval of President Joe Biden's request for funding for further aid to Ukraine.

What is known about the threat of agreement disruption in Congress for aid financing to Ukraine

According to journalists of American publications, the leader of the Republican minority in the Senate, Mitch McConnell, expressed doubts about Congress's ability to agree on the financing of military aid to Ukraine before the presidential elections in November this year.

During a closed-door meeting of Senate GOP representatives, McConnell said time and political will to pass a bipartisan bill to tighten measures at the Mexican border and approve aid to Ukraine is running out and may already be over.

He said that before the negotiations on changes to the US immigration policy and strengthening security measures on the border with Mexico, this topic united Republicans, and funding aid to Ukraine was divided. Still, the policy on these issues has changed.

Republicans declare their full support for Trump

McConnell says that Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump is preparing an election campaign mainly on the theme of opposition to immigration.

He emphasized that the representatives of the Republican Party are currently trying not to harm Trump with their actions.

McConnell also added that the issue of supporting Ukraine is a matter of "cold" and "hard" US interests. Still, he admitted that the compromise he proposed on the agreement on border security in exchange for financing aid to Ukraine was in jeopardy. A new approach was needed to resolve the issues.

McConnell acknowledged that Trump continues to have control over the Republican Party and called him "the candidate," even though the party has not yet officially nominated him.
