The cyber specialists of the Defence Intelligence of Ukraine (DIU) attacked the Russian drone control program, and a large-scale failure occurred.

DIU cyber attack on Russia's drone control system

DIU cyber specialists carried out another successful operation against the Russian occupiers — as of February 8, 2024, the enemy complained of a massive failure of the drone control program.

The Russians installed this software to flash DJI-brand drones for military operations.

DIU notes that the software allows, among other things, hostile drone operators to:

  • configure control panels and create new ones;

  • capture video and transfer the picture to the command post;

  • control the drone from the computer (not through the remote control).

Through web servers, the specified Russian project of reflashing drones ensures the functioning of the "Identification friend or foe" system.

According to preliminary data, the servers stopped working due to the DIU cyber attack, so all software is recognised as "foe" and denies access to Russians.

Without access to the servers, and therefore to the system, controlling drones from remotes is probably impossible.

The intelligence officers note that now the Russians are trying in every way to solve the problem, in particular by switching to a manual control mode.

DIU cyberattacks: what is known

On January 30, DIU attacked the server of Russia's Ministry of Defense, which was used for special communications. As a result of the cyberattack, the exchange of information between the Russian MOD unit, which used the specified server located in Moscow, was stopped.

On January 24, cyber volunteers from the "BO Team" group launched an attack against the Russian Far Eastern branch (the largest of the three) of the "Planeta" space hydrometeorology research centre.

According to the DIU, dozens of strategic companies of the Russian Federation, which work for "defence" and play a key role in supporting the Russian occupation forces, will remain without critically important information and services for a long time.
