Former Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi has the best chance of becoming the new head of the European Council.

Who can lead the Eurocouncil — according to the Financial Times

The editors of the Financial Times talked to European politicians who claim that Mario Draghi can become the successor of the current head of the European Council, Charles Michel.

Official Brussels notes that other candidates will appear for this position shortly.

However, so far, the insiders of the publication cannot predict how events will develop with agreements on the filling of higher positions in the EU because it also depends on the results of the pan-European elections.

Interestingly, one of the anonymous sources stated that Mario Draghi is not applying for any leading positions in the European Union.

The EU will do everything possible to prevent Orbán from becoming the interim head of the European Council

According to journalists, such activity in the search for Michel's successor can be explained by Brussels' reluctance to allow Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán to lead the European Council.

Today, the option of appointing a temporary candidate is even being discussed.

Despite this, the EU does not believe that Mario Draghi can agree to a temporary role.

Among the other candidates for the position of the head of the European Council are the current Prime Ministers of Spain Pedro Sanchez and Denmark Mette Frederiksen. Unlike Draghi, both leaders are associated with major European political parties, which is an important factor in EU appointments.

According to the publication's insiders, Draghi's lack of party affiliation could become a severe problem for him in the European political arena.
