Iran has developed a new Shahed-107 "explosive reconnaissance" attack drone for Russia, which the aggressor country will use to attack Ukraine.

What is known about Iran's new drone for Russia

An informed Sky News security source claims that Iran has developed a new Shahed-107 attack drone for Russia's war in Ukraine. It also appears to be close to providing the aggressor country with surface-to-surface missiles.

The Shahed-107 is described as an "explosive and reconnaissance" drone, possibly equipped with technology to find combat targets such as British and US multiple launch rocket systems used by Ukrainian forces.

The source also said that "several units" of the specially designed drone could be offered to Russia as part of a deal estimated to be worth more than $2 million.

According to the sources, this reflects "the significant power projection work that Iran is doing to support Russia's interests in Ukraine".

What are characteristics of new Shahed-107

As noted, the Shahed-107 belongs to the Shahed-101 family of unmanned aerial vehicles with V-shaped tailplanes.

The drone, which is about 2.5 metres long and has a wingspan of three metres, can be launched from a vehicle and is estimated to have a range of up to 1,500 km.

It is expected to be equipped with a video transmitter. Such reconnaissance capabilities mean that the drone can be used to identify advanced targets for engagement by other UAVs or weapons systems.

A security source said that the Iranian security forces conducted tests with the Russians at an airbase in central Iran with the participation of Shahed-107 and Shahed-136 drones.

In addition, it is noted that the partnership between Iran and Russia will become even more significant after the supply of Iranian surface-to-surface ballistic missiles to the aggressor country.
