In Moldova, the temporary assistance centre for refugees from Ukraine, located near the Palanca border crossing checkpoint, has ceased to operate.

Refugee assistance center was closed in Moldova

NewsMaker, citing the General Inspectorate for Emergency Situations of Moldova, reports that the centre for assistance to refugees from Ukraine in Palanca was closed on 4 January.

It is known that the inspection staff are dismantling the temporary camp that was set up near the checkpoint at the beginning of the full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine. The entire infrastructure, including tents, technical equipment and sanitary modules, is being removed.

The inspectorate noted that the centre was opened on 24 February 2022, and since then, more than 9,200 refugees from Ukraine have passed through it, and more than 6,200 people have temporarily resided there.

Migration officers, carabinieri and rescuers ensured the operation and security of the camp.

Since the first days of the war in Ukraine, refugees have been receiving assistance here. People were provided with housing, food, medical care and assistance in settling in Moldova, the inspectorate noted.

According to the UN, as of 10 October 2023, more than 6.2 million Ukrainians have become refugees since 24 February 2022.

More than 5.14 million Ukrainian refugees have applied for temporary residence in neighbouring Western European countries.

According to the European Statistical Office, as of May 2023, the largest share of Ukrainian refugees is in Germany (27%) and Poland (24%).
