Already in the spring of 2024, Norway will receive Ukrainian marines for training. In addition, the country will provide inflatable boats and equipment worth NOK 60 million.

Ukrainian Marines will study in Norway

Norway will start training Ukraine's Marines to operate on small boats this spring. This exercise will be the first step in the work of the maritime coalition, which Norway leads together with Great Britain.

This was reported by Norway's Ministry of Defence's press service.

Initially, the training will last about a year and begin in cooperation with allied countries in the Netherlands.

Norway has developed a good relationship with Ukrainian marines through training in Norway, and now we are setting this cooperation further and creating a unique training program.

Aid to Ukraine from Norway

The Government of Norway has decided to allow direct sales of weapons and defence products from the Norwegian defence industry to the defence authorities of Ukraine, provided that the export meets the requirements of the needs and control of the end user.

Ukraine's support is important for the security of Norway and Europe. We must plan for the possibility of continuing an illegal war of aggression. That is why the government decided to allow direct sales of weapons and defense-related products of the Norwegian defense industry to Ukraine, said Minister of Foreign Affairs Espen Bart Eide.

Norwegian companies can apply to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for an export license to sell weapons and defence products directly to Ukraine.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Norway indicates that all applications will be carefully evaluated, and control will continue within a strict framework.

Applications will be evaluated according to the following criteria:

  • Direct sales of weapons and defence products can only be made to the Ukrainian authorities.

  • Applications must include documentation and government guarantees regarding the end-use and end-user and consist of re-export (onward transfer) provisions.

  • The transportation and delivery of weapons and defence-related products must occur through safe and established logistical routes.

  • Applications are evaluated following Norway's export control regulations and Norway's obligations under international law, including the UN Arms Trade Treaty.

In October 2023, Norway announced financial assistance for demining Ukraine. It is about $18.5 million.

Later, Norway allocated 84 million euros to Norwegian organisations that help Ukrainians.

Oslo also plans to transfer ten more NASAMS launchers to Ukraine.
