The ruling party of Hungary, Fidesz, intends to approve the ratification of Sweden's application to join NATO on February 26.
The Hungarian parliament will vote for Sweden's accession to NATO
The Hungarian Parliament has determined the vote date on the ratification of Sweden's accession to NATO. The head of the ruling party's faction, Mate Kocish, announced it.
Kosych said that at the meeting on February 26, the issue of ratifying Sweden's entry into the North Atlantic Alliance would be included in the agenda, and the ruling party's deputies "intend to support it."
Prime Minister Viktor Orban previously said that the vote will most likely take place at the beginning of the spring session of the parliament, as early as next week.
What is known about Sweden's accession to NATO
Sweden has applied to join NATO in 2022. The only countries that delayed the ratification of membership were Turkey and Hungary. The Turkish parliament recently approved Sweden's entry into the alliance.
The last step on Sweden's path to NATO is ratification by the Hungarian parliament.
Sweden's entry is crucial for the alliance to improve its ability to defend its eastern flank, which has doubled in length since Finland joined last April.
Russia's invasion of Ukraine two years ago spurred two Scandinavian countries to apply to join NATO.
