FT: Putin plans to use Ukraine to solve the demographic crisis in Russia

Vladimir Putin

Kremlin dictator and war criminal Vladimir Putin is trying to solve the problem of overcoming the demographic crisis in Russia at the expense of the Ukrainian population in the occupied territories.

What is known about Putin's strategy regarding the use of Ukrainians in the occupied territories

As the journalists of the publication note, the criminal war unleashed by the Kremlin against Ukraine simultaneously exacerbates the problem of demography in Russia. It may partially be part of its solution.

According to the UN, as of 2021, the population of the Russian Federation was 145 million people, while in 1994, this figure was equal to 149 million.

Despite the arrival in Russia of millions of migrants from Central Asia. And the events of recent years only exacerbate the problem of demography in Russia.

Journalists refer to last year's study by analysts of the medical journal The Lancet, according to which excess mortality — the number of deaths above the historical average — in Russia during the coronavirus pandemic amounted to about 1.1 million.

At the same time, according to the Pentagon, the criminal invasion of Ukraine last year alone caused 120,000 casualties to the Russian army.

At the same time, hundreds of thousands of Russian men left the country after the start of the war launched by Russia against Ukraine.

Putin is obsessed with the idea of overcoming the demographic crisis in Russia

The authors of the article note that the Kremlin dictator is well aware of the scale of the problem and is trying to take measures.

In particular, six months after the beginning of the criminal invasion of Ukraine, Putin signed a decree to restore the Soviet award "Heroine Mother", which was awarded to women who gave birth to and raised ten or more children.

One of the first laureates of this award was Medni Kadyrova, the wife of the Chechen "president" Ramzan Kadyrov.

And less than two weeks ago, Putin signed another decree declaring 2024 the "year of the family" in Russia.

In his public speeches in recent years, the Russian dictator pedals the topic of the family more and more actively, mentioning in particular how wonderful it was once when women gave birth to 10 children each in their lifetime.

Putin is obsessed with this demographic problem. In his opinion, the power of the country is related to the size of its population. The larger the population, the more powerful the state, French demographer Laurent Chalard says.

Journalists of the publication emphasize that the occupation by the criminal army of the Russian Federation of Ukrainian territories, where about 8.6 million people lived before the start of the war, maybe an attempt to solve the problem of demography in Russia at least partially.

The abduction and indoctrination of thousands of Ukrainian children is also part of this strategy.

In Russia itself, a semi-religious campaign to restrict abortion is gaining momentum. Although sociologists have already proven that there is no direct connection between the ban on abortion and the birth rate in the modern world.

So, in general, all these Kremlin initiatives have the opposite effect.

The Covid-19 pandemic and the "special military operation" have created a backdrop of extreme uncertainty about the future. Militarization of life in Russia also does not encourage people to increase their families (...) We see a phenomenon that Russia has faced many times. Wave after wave of wars and repressions that exhaust human resources, the expert of the "Carnegie Endowment for International Peace" Andrei Kolesnikov explains.
