Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine Valerii Zaluzhnyi commented on the defence of Avdiivka in the Donetsk region during a briefing, saying that the Armed Forces of Ukraine will defend the city as long as necessary, but if the resouces are not enough, it is important to save people.

Zaluzhnyi commented on Avdiivka's defence

We don't need to get hung up and make a big deal out of a particular settlement. The conduct of military operations is subject to its own laws, which do not depend on whether MPs or journalists like it or not.

The Commander-in-Chief noted that Russian troops have the ability to concentrate their forces in a particular direction.

And they can do what happened to Bakhmut in two or three months. Every piece of land is precious to us, and we will defend it as long as we have the strength to do so. If we don't have enough strength, we rescue civilians and then sent them to safety.

The situation near Avdiivka in the Donetsk region

On 25 December, Oleksandr Stupun, a spokesman for the joint press centre of the Tavriya defence forces, said during a telethon that Russian troops were losing 300-400 people every day near Avdiivka.

At the moment, we are holding the line. There is always a threat of encirclement and breakthrough. But we are pulling up reserves, we are reforming, we are inflicting losses on the enemy. Every day, he loses 300-400 people killed and wounded, a lot of military equipment. So at the moment we cannot talk about any real threat of being surrounded.

As of 12 December, Ukrainian troops have killed more than 13,000 Russian occupiers along the Avdiivka-Novopavlivka line since the start of the enemy offensive in October.

These data were released by the press secretary of the US National Security Council at the White House, Adrienne Watson.

As of 17 December, there were 1,230 civilians in the city.
