Russian ruble fell sharply after news of Navalny's death

After reports of the death of Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny, the rate of the Russian ruble renewed its multi-week lows.

Fall of the ruble amid the Navalny's death

The Moscow Times, citing the Moscow Stock Exchange, reports that pairs with the euro and the yuan reached their lowest levels since January 9 — 99.85 and 12.81, respectively.

Against the dollar, the ruble is 93.00, the worst since January 4, excluding two short-term rate jumps over the past month.

Navalny's death: what is known

On February 16, the Yamalo-Nenets Department of the Federal Penitentiary Service, where Alexei Navalny was serving his sentence, announced his death. The politician was 47 years old.

After the walk, Navalny felt unwell and almost immediately lost consciousness, reports the Department of Corrections. The emergency medical doctors confirmed the death of the convict, russian media cites.

Navalny's lawyer flew to the village of Harp, where the colony is located.

In 2021, Navalny returned to the Russian Federation after an almost fatal poisoning allegedly committed by the FSB. He was immediately arrested on charges of fraud and extremism.
