SSU detains agent of Russian foreign intelligence service in Ukraine

On 5 January, it was officially reported that the Security Service of Ukraine (SSU) managed to detain a traitor "political expert" in Poltava, who was preparing customised articles for Russian online publications. It is also emphasised that he is an agent of Russia's foreign intelligence service.

In Poltava, SSU detained another traitor to Ukraine

According to the Ukrainian special services, the enemy intelligence agent prepared more than 60 customised publications for the Russian online publications Odna Rodina and the Strategic Culture Foundation.

It is important to understand that these information resources are de facto international mouthpieces of the Kremlin, which aim to spread Russian propaganda in foreign countries.

The SSU established that the detainee had prepared a number of publications in which he "whitewashed" the air attacks of the Russian racists on the civilian infrastructure of Ukraine. In particular, these were custom-made materials related to hostile attacks on a shopping centre in Kremenchuk, a residential building in Dnipro and massive shelling of energy facilities in Kyiv.

The "political expert" traitor did everything possible to discredit the Ukrainian command and soldiers of the Armed Forces of Ukraine in the eyes of Kyiv's international partners in his materials.

It is also reported that his articles were published under the pseudonyms Andrey Uvarov, Igor Loginov and Pyotr Zharkov.

In addition, it was established that the traitor to Ukraine received almost ₴250 thousand (about £5,000) from his Russian handlers.

As the investigation established, the enemy's accomplice was a resident of Poltava, an ideological supporter of racism who supported the armed aggression of Russia. In addition, he created and headed a pro-Kremlin NGO, the Russian Community of Poltava Region, in the region’s capital city.

It was after this that Russia's intelligence service drew attention to him and remotely engaged the traitor in secret cooperation.

Detained agent of Russia faces life imprisonment

As the SSU press service notes, the detainee has already been notified of suspicion under two articles of the Criminal Code of Ukraine:

  • Part 2 of Art. 111 (treason);

  • ch. 2, 3 Art. 436-2 (justification, recognition as legitimate, denial of armed aggression of the Russian Federation against Ukraine, glorification of its participants).

It is also reported that the traitor has been taken into custody.

The investigation is ongoing to establish all the circumstances of the crime. The offender faces life imprisonment for the crime. The operation was conducted by the SSU Office in Poltava region under the procedural supervision of the Regional Prosecutor's Office.
