Putin has declared the Kh-47M2 Kinzhal hypersonic air-launched ballistic missiles to be his "super weapon", which plays an important role in the Kremlin's military doctrine. However, Ukraine's anti-aircraft missile system surpasses these goals.
Putin's "superweapon" is not achieving its goals in Ukraine
According to the report, on 14 December, the Russian Air Force used the Kinzhal air-launched ballistic missile for the first time since August 2023. Russia fired at least one missile over central Ukraine, likely targeting a military airfield.
According to British intelligence, the Kinzhal is one of six types of "superweapons" announced by President Putin in 2018 that are intended to play an important role in Russia's future military doctrine. In the war with Ukraine, Russia is keeping these weapons for what it considers to be high-value and well-protected targets.
Russia has already used Kinzhal missiles before.
Many of the launches probably did not reach their intended targets, while Ukraine also managed to intercept attacks by this supposedly "invincible" system, the British Ministry of Defence said.
Patriot vs Kinzhal
In late November, Ukrainian Air Force spokesman Yuriy Ihnat said that after Ukraine received some samples of Western air defence systems, the Armed Forces of Ukraine were able to shoot down hypersonic and ballistic missiles.
Now we have 15 downed Kinzhal. Plus, dozens of ballistic missiles flying towards Kyiv have been shot down. Patriot has proven itself, the colonel said.
In addition, on 14 December, the Russian army fired Kinzhal missiles at Starokostiantyniv in the Khmelnytskyi region.
We are not talking about the consequences, especially the work of the Kinzhal, and this was the Kh-47 Kinzhal. Let the enemy draw their own conclusions. We will not give information about where they were aiming, whether they hit or missed, Ihnat said.
