The American companies Microsoft, Cisco and the Swedish Ericsson are helping the Ukrainian mobile operator "Kyivstar" to resume work after a large-scale cyber attack.

What is known about the resumption of work of Kyivstar

The company's CEO, Oleksandr Komarov, said that Kyivstar cooperates with Microsoft, Cisco, and Ericsson.

This is a global team involved in solving this case, Komarov said.

In particular, Ericsson is involved in restoring the operator's infrastructure.

Microsoft is an expert in the investigation, because we need to understand the root cause of the problem, the "Kyivstar" president added.

Cisco supplies all Kyivstar cyber protection systems and helps the operator "raise this perimeter and protect".

Failure of Kyivstar: what is known

On the morning of December 12, there was a large-scale failure in the work of the mobile communications operator "Kyivstar".

The mobile operator "Kyivstar" confirmed that the cause of a large-scale failure on the morning of December 12 was a powerful hacker attack, but assured that customers' data is safe.

The attack on the largest mobile operator did not just leave half of Ukraine without communication. The attack hit many businesses dependent on the mobile operator's communications, state institutions and even Kyivstar's competitors, who were not prepared for a significant increase in traffic due to the desire of users to switch to working networks.

One of the versions currently being investigated by the investigators of the Security Service of Ukraine is involvement in a hacker attack by the special services of the Russian Federation.

The Security Service of Ukraine opened criminal proceedings under eight articles of the Criminal Code following the hacker attack on "Kyivstar".

Kyivstar General Director Oleksandr Komarov emphasized that the cyber attack partially destroyed the operator's IT infrastructure.

The experts concluded that the enemy's goal was to destroy the infrastructure. Komarov noted that the attackers significantly damaged the IT infrastructure. The company could not counter this on a virtual level, so they turned off "Kyivstar" physically” from the network to limit the enemy's access to the company's infrastructure.

As of 20:00 on December 12, "Kyivstar" specialists partially restored the operation of fixed communication services.

Currently, the company's specialists are working on the restoration of other services and will do everything possible to finally complete this work by December 13, 2023.

After the stabilization of the network, all subscribers and corporate clients who could not use the company's services due to a hacker attack will receive compensation.
