Allies of Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán plan to hold a closed-door meeting with Republicans in Washington to press for a permanent end to US military support for Ukraine.

Orban's team is trying to undermine Ukraine's support in the United States

According to the British edition of The Guardian, Marton Ugroszdi, who is the undersecretary in the Office of the Hungarian Prime Minister’s Policy, and Attila Demko, a leading scholar who supports Orbán, together with members of the Hungarian Embassy in Washington, will start a two-day event on December 11, organized by the conservative think tank Heritage Foundation.

As the journalists managed to find out, the first day involved holding panel speeches about the Russian-Ukrainian war.

In addition, it is emphasized that guests such as Kelly Curry, former ambassador under then President Donald Trump, and Magor Ernyei, international director of the Center for Fundamental Rights, will be present during the meeting.

Journalists also note that some attendees, including Republican members of Congress, were invited to join closed-door talks the next day.

Why Hungary's new provocation could be fatal for Ukraine

What is essential to understand is that this meeting should take place against the background of tense debates in the US regarding future support for Ukraine.

As you know, the team of the American leader Joe Biden has already warned earlier that without the actions of Congress, the money for the purchase of additional weapons and equipment for Kyiv will run out by the end of the year.

Orban is sure that aid to Ukraine will not pass in Congress. Therefore, he is also trying to block aid from the EU, one of the publication’s insiders said.

As previously mentioned, the Heritage Foundation leads Project 2025, a coalition preparing for the next conservative presidential administration. This think tank has repeatedly tried to block US aid to Ukraine.
