The Prime Minister of Estonia, Kaja Kallas, said she is interested in the Secretary General of NATO position. Jens Stoltenberg will retire next year.
Kallas is open to the post of NATO Secretary General
During POLITICO's Defense Summit in Washington, Callas was asked if she wanted to be considered for the post of NATO secretary general when Jens Stoltenberg stepped down. She answered yes.
POLITICO writes that Callas' response and her visit to Washington come at a time when there is growing concern among leaders of Baltic and Eastern European countries such as Estonia that US support for Ukraine's military effort is increasingly wavering.
At the same time, NATO's role as a key force in supporting Ukraine is growing as the Alliance looks to show strength and unity in the face of new threats such as China, artificial intelligence and other challenges.
What Kallas said about the war in Ukraine
During her speech, Kallas was optimistic that Ukraine would eventually be able to repel the Russian invasion.
At the same time, there is growing concern in Europe and the US that Ukraine and Russia are approaching a stalemate on the battlefield. Kallas rejected this idea, saying that portraying conditions on the battlefield in such a light serves Russia's interests.
