The US does not recognise the legitimacy or the results of the fake elections in sovereign Ukraine, which are part of the presidential elections in Russia.

The USA reacted to the "election" of the Russian president in the occupied Ukrainian territories

The US State Department spokesman Matthew Miller stated that the US condemns Russia's ongoing efforts to undermine the sovereignty, territorial integrity and political independence of Ukraine by holding fake elections in the occupied Ukrainian territories.

"To make it clear, Luhansk, Donetsk, Zaporizhzhia, Kherson and Crimea are Ukraine," said Miller.

He added that Moscow will dictate the results of these elections and cannot reflect the free will of these Ukrainian citizens who are forced to vote for them.

This performance will only further demonstrate Russia's neglect of its obligations under international law.

He said that the US will continue to use all available tools to bring to justice those responsible for actions that undermine the sovereignty, territorial integrity and political independence of free countries, including those who serve as observers of the Kremlin's fake elections in the occupied territories of Ukraine.

What is known about the Russian presidential election

The presidential elections of the Russian Federation will be held over three days, from March 15 to 17, 2024.

In December, the Central Election Commission of Russia adopted a resolution on holding presidential elections in March 2024 in the occupied territories of Ukraine.

In the occupied territories, in particular in the Luhansk region, the occupying authorities began preparations for holding a pseudo-voting in February. It will last several days, there will be an opportunity to vote at home, said head of Severodonetsk City Military Administration (CMA) Roman Vlasenko.

In addition, in those settlements where the Internet is available, the occupiers try to organise online voting. It will be possible to take part in these elections not only with a Russian passport but also with a Ukrainian passport.

The day before, the heads of the foreign affairs committees of 20 countries published a joint statement in which they rejected the legitimacy of the "elections" of the president of the Russian Federation held in the temporarily occupied territories of Ukraine. The joint statement was signed by the heads of committees from 20 countries — Ukraine, Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia, Luxembourg, the Czech Republic, Germany, Moldova, Poland, Israel, the USA, Ireland, Italy, Iceland, Romania, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Spain and Great Britain.
